Advice from ICT - Telephone Technical Support Call Scams

The telephone technical support scam is becoming increasingly sophisticated and difficult to distinguish from legitimate tech support calls. In this scam, individuals claiming to work Microsoft, or another tech company, make unsolicited calls to customers and insist there is a technical problem with their product. They ultimately try to defraud customers by pressuring them to pay to fix the issue.

For the ICT team this provides us with a great deal of entertainment. Our mission being to see how long we can keep the scammer on the phone for before they realise that they are getting nowhere and hang up.  If they are on the phone to us then they can’t be calling someone else.

However. the best protection from these scams is to hang up immediately if you receive a suspicious call. Here are ICTs five tips to help you avoid being scammed:

Hang up! If an unsolicited caller pressurises you to act quickly and give up sensitive personal and financial information to fix an issue and/or engages in threatening, aggressive behaviour, that’s a sign of a scam.

Never hand over your financial information to unsolicited callers who try to charge you to remove computer viruses, malware, or ransomware, even if they have specific information about your computer.

Never pay for tech support services any type of gift card or by wiring funds.

Never visit unverified websites and never download and install software that unsolicited callers try directing you to.

Never agree to give control of your computer to any unsolicited caller to fix an issue you did not report—despite how convincing they may sound.

South and East Lincolnshire Councils Partnership’s Cultural Conference

The South & East Lincolnshire Councils Partnership is hosting a Cultural Conference, with the aim to provide arts and heritage organisations and practitioners across the region the chance to network, share ideas and get involved in the launch of a new creative programme of work.

The main focus of the day will be to inspire links between arts and heritage projects for place transformation and connect people across the partnership area, as well as share plans on activity for the year ahead including information from the Partnership’s Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation project, which has already facilitated a variety of amazing events across East Lindsey, South Holland and Boston and is continuing to deliver events as the months go on.

The cultural conference is due to become an annual event taking place across South and East Lincolnshire, as part of the Partnership’s commitment to help connect the cultural and heritage sectors across the area and create a strong and lasting community to support each other and share best practice.

The conference is free to attend for all, and will be held at Blackfriars Theatre, Boston, on Wednesday 22 May from 9:30am to 4pm.

If you are available on this date and time, it would be a great pleasure if you could take the time to visit the event and potentially engage with the various practitioners and organisations visiting on the day, but to also get a feel for the amazing work that is happening, and will continue to happen, through the Partnership’s ACENPO project.

Please make sure to book your place at https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-south-east-lincolnshire-cultural-conference-2024-tickets-884953328227?aff=oddtdtcreator if you’re interested.

Paddling Pools

The pools at Queens Park Mablethorpe, and The Fairy Dell Skegness will open on Saturday 25 May in readiness for Spring Bank Holiday and they will remain open through to Monday 30 September 2024.

They are available for people to enjoy for free every day during the summer between 10am and 6pm with no need to book!

Due to the ongoing development work of the new Colonnade building at Sutton on Sea, the Maple Leaf pool will not be opening this year to ensure the safety of residents and visitors, returning in 2025.

However, the council is taking this opportunity to carry out lots of refurbishment work to the pool and will be holding a series of events in Sutton on Sea over the summer months for people to enjoy.

NHS ‘111 press 2’ a big step forward for access to urgent mental health support

The NHS ‘111 press option 2’ for mental health is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for all ages.

People can use this number if they have an urgent mental health concern themselves or about someone they know.

By providing access to a mental health professional, without the need for a GP referral, it can help support people to manage a mental health crisis and in many cases be an alternative to attending emergency departments or calling the police.

The service can be accessed by calling NHS 111 and selecting ‘option 2’. Callers will be transferred to a dedicated member of a mental health team in their local health board area.

It includes an assessment of needs and telephoned based intervention to reduce distress. Where appropriate individuals can be referred to mental health services, given self-care advice or signposted to other support.

The service has been rolled out across the UK and has so far received more than 15,000 calls. The majority of callers have had their problems resolved through advice on self-management or been referred to local third sector groups, with a minority of callers referred to urgent mental health care services.
